Council Positions

As a SSD Council member you will represent the disabled student body to make decisions on the programs, events, and campaigns we run and how we can effectively spend our student funds!

Currently Filled Positions

Chairperson

  • Act as chair at all meetings of the Society unless otherwise delegated
  • Be an ex officio member of all committees of the Society;
  • Represent the interests of and act as the principal spokesperson for the Society within the UVic Community and public at large
  • Be the Executive Council member with signing authority for financial and other business of the Society
  • Be responsible for management and supervision of Society staff
  • Coordinate the activities of Council including calling meetings of Council when required
  • Be responsible for ensuring client confidentiality such that, in situations which demand, staff will only share confidential information with the Chair(s) unless authorized by the Chair(s) to inform others
  • Attend training and onboarding

Approximate weekly hours: 6-12

Treasurer

  • Manage the financial affairs of the Society under the Council’s direction
  • Ensure that the financial records of the Society are maintained in good order
  • Produce budgets and financial statements for the Society and make them available to Council and Members on request
  • Provide access to the financial records of the Society to Council and Members on request
  • Be Executive Council member of the Society
  • Prepare and present an annual financial report to Members at Annual General Meeting
  • Comply with all applicable financial policies of the Society and the UVSS in performing their duties
  • Attend and Participate in Council Meetings
  • Support or create SSD events
  • Attend training and onboarding

Student Liaison

  • Be the liaison between UVic students with a disability and the Council
  • Assist the Chairperson(s) in their role as spokesperson for the Society within the UVic Community and public at large
  • The Society may ratify the Student Liaison as an Executive Council member at a Council Meeting with their consent
  • Attend and Participate in Council Meetings
  • Support or create SSD events
  • Attend training and onboarding

Graduate Students’ Representative

  • Be enrolled in the Faculty of Graduate Studies at UVic
  • Represent and promote the interests of UVic graduate students with a disability on the Council
  • Be the liaison between UVic graduate students with a disability and the Council
  • Attend and Participate in Council Meetings
  • Support or create SSD events
  • Attend training and onboarding

Approximate weekly hours: 2-4

SSD UVSS Constituency Representative 

  • Represent and Promote the interests of the Society on the UVSS Board
  • Attend UVSS Board meetings (biweekly) and Advocacy Relations Committee meetings (monthly)
  • Report to the SSD Council on their activities at the UVSS Board and ARC meetings unless they are prevented from doing so for reasons of confidentiality
  • Attend and participate in SSD Council meetings (once or twice a month) and SSD exec meetings (weekly)
  • Support or create SSD events
  • Attend training and onboarding

Approximate weekly hours: 5-7

Secretary 

  • Taking minutes at all SSD Council meetings, unless otherwise delegated
  • Ensuring that updated governing documents and Council meetings minutes are available to the regular membership in a timely manner
  • Attend and participate in Council meetings 
  • Support or create SSD events
  • Attend training and onboarding

International Students Representative 

  • Be the liaison between international disabled students at UVic and the Council
  • Represent and promote the interests of international disabled students
  • Be enrolled at UVic as an international student
  • Attend and participate in Council meetings
  • Support or create SSD events
  • Attend training and onboarding 

Approximate weekly hours: 2-4

General Member at Large x 8

  • Represent and promote the interests of UVic students with a disability in general on the Council
  • Attend and Participate in Council Meetings
  • Support or create SSD events
  • Attend training and onboarding 
  • Support Executive Council
