FAQ
Am I disabled enough?
At the SSD, we recognize that disability is a broad and diverse experience. We welcome students with visible and invisible disabilities, as well as students facing mental health barriers, into our community and spaces. You do not need a formal diagnosis to be part of the SSD community. We support self-identification and believe that each person is the expert on their own lived experience. If you identify as disabled or experience barriers related to disability, you are welcome here.
Do I need a diagnosis?
No. You do not need a formal diagnosis to be part of the SSD community. We welcome students who self-identify as disabled, as well as those who are exploring their relationship to disability and accessibility. If you have questions about diagnosis, self-identification, or accessing support, we encourage you to email us or visit our space. Our staff and community members are happy to chat and help connect you with resources.

What do you do?
The SSD is a post-secondary student advocacy group within the University of Victoria Students’ Society (UVSS). We are dedicated to promoting the full participation, inclusion, and well-being of UVic students who self-identify as having one or more disabilities. Our work focuses on reducing barriers across the social, emotional, and academic aspects of student life.
Our goal is to raise awareness of the barriers and challenges faced by students with disabilities and to advocate for meaningful change within the UVic community. We collaborate with campus partners and stakeholders to advance accessibility and equity, challenge and address institutional discrimination, and foster inclusive, anti-oppressive spaces. We have a lounge space located in the Student Union Building where students can relax and decompress between classes and access our services such as support from our staff, free snacks, use our desktop computers and free black/white printing! We also host a variety of social events and educational workshops for students to connect with one another and resources in the community.

How do I volunteer?
VOLUNTEER POSITIONS
What Can I Do as a Volunteer?
There are many ways to get involved with SSD, and we welcome volunteers with a wide range of interests, skills, and availability. In the past, volunteers signed up for specific roles in advance. While this provided lots of choice, it also required significant coordination. To make volunteering more flexible and accessible, we are moving to a volunteer mailing list system. By joining the mailing list, you’ll receive monthly emails outlining upcoming volunteer opportunities and areas where support is needed. You can then respond to the opportunities that interest you and fit your schedule. This allows you to choose how and when you’d like to support SSD throughout the year.
Examples of Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer needs vary throughout the year and may include:
- Event setup and takedown
- Assisting during events
- Tabling and community outreach
- Creating or updating resources
- Organizing the SSD lounge & office
- Monitoring Zoom for online or hybrid events
- Participating in our #Access4All campaign
Eligibility
Everyone is welcome to volunteer with the SSD community.
